Artificial Intelligence (AI) moves on knife’s edge. It is unsteady, seemingly unstoppable and often misunderstood. Between cloud-based AI solutions and highly complex autonomous systems we need to leave the play mode on our way to enterprise maturity and take on responsibility. This confronts us, our processes, technologies and companies as a whole with new challenges. It requires new ways of thinking and acting, new architectures, spaces, competencies and routines.

Based on experience from over a hundred data, analytics and AI projects over the last 10 years, in which we acted as data science pioneers in the German-speaking markets and across industries, a common denominator emerged – a reference model and clearly structured process which paves the way to a company´s own digital sovereignty. With AI Thinking, we created a unique methodology which, based on ideas, real-world projects and business opportunities, lays a new foundation in technology, organization, skills and the often-quoted mindset. It is crucial that we do not invest one-dimensionally, only think about data, algorithms and the latest technologies and place just those at the centre of a digital development.
We experience quite often that companies lack experience and competence in software development, and that their relationship with data and analytics derives from business controlling and reporting mainly. This needs to be built on and to be re-thought for the future. AI is software. Even if one or the other paradigm has changed, aspects of the software development lifecycle have to be adjusted and operations on highly complex, dynamic and often resource-hungry system and application landscapes already show the technological change of tomorrow’s IT organization, AI is and remains to be software. This means that we have to value humans and human intelligence even more. What is powerful and new is defined by the “plus” – the connections of man and machine, the seamless together in collaboration.

This is what Birds on Mars stands for as well.
Designing the “in-betweens”
Today, we do not know where AI will lead us in the future. Anyone who claims the opposite is mistaken or lying (one or the other). Current developments are groundbreaking, at least impressive, and enable us to think, design and develop things that until yesterday were considered science fiction. Think of autonomous driving, Alexa´s speech recognition or current developments in the field of image generation by so-called GANs (Generative Adversarial Networks). Most important: keep moving! With the Artificial Muse, one of our innovation projects at Birds on Mars, we are constantly challenging ourselves and exploring the “in-betweens” of man and machine. The Artificial Muse is an Inspirational AI that supports the renowned painter Roman Lipski in his daily creative work, provides him with new inspiration and leads him to new forms of expression. Roman Lipski is one of the first people in the world who has been working with an AI on a daily basis for more than 2 years. Through this collaboration we get to know the “in-betweens”, explore them out and consciously develop them further. Here, too, we are at the beginning of something incredible. Here, too, it is on us to shape it in our own way.
